Smoking at Work
Implementing and Managing the Ban on Smoking in the Workplace
Thursday, 15th February 2007
According to Professor Alex Markham, Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK, the ban on smoking in all workplaces effective from summer 2007, will be the "single most important advance in public health since Sir Richard Doll identified that smoking causes lung cancer in 1954". However, for HR and Occupational Health professionals the ban will most certainly receive a controversial reception in the workplace given that one in four people in the UK is a smoker. Employers need to plan for these changes now to ensure they both maximise the health and well-being benefits and develop effective strategies for employees who smoke.
