A recent study by Right Management, the HR consultants, has demonstrated the lack of engagement of UK workers in comparison to other developed countries. The survey of 16,500 workers showed that just 29% of UK workers are engaged in their jobs. This compares to 38% of Australians, 43% in the US and 47% of workers in Norway.

This dissatisfaction with work is concentrated in junior management and below, however, the upper echelons of management are also affected. Only 47% of senior employees are fully engaged in their current position and many others are only partially engaged. This has major implications for HR departments, as it affects the loyalty and work rate of their organisation's most influential staff.

Charles Fair, from Right Management, said, 'I would seriously worry about the state of any business where the top people are not fully on board. Not only are directors responsible for managing the company's performance and direction, they are responsible for ensuring more junior staff are motivated and working productively.'

Another finding to come from this study was that the longer an employee stays at one company, the less engaged they become. 75% of those employed with a company for more than five years expressed dissatisfaction with their employers, compared with 57% of those that had been employed for less than a year.
