Employing Non-UK Nationals Conference
How to Recruit & Employ Migrant Workers
21st & 22nd March 2007

The Government recently announced changes to the regulations on migrant workers which will have a significant impact on British business. With a new wave of migration expected when Romania and Bulgaria join the EU in January, the rules for how migrant workers can enter the UK will be narrowed and a more stringent enforcement and penalty regime will be introduced. Under the new rules, employers and HR managers found to be employing someone who does not have the legal right to work in the UK can be held personally responsible and face fines of up to £5,000 and a custodial sentence.

Although the policies are primarily targeting "rogue employers" who consciously recruit illegal workers, any organisation employing staff from overseas should make adequate preparations now to avoid the disruption, embarrassment, and costs of an immigration raid. All organisations need to be aware of the legal liabilities these reforms pose and take appropriate steps to ensure compliance.

This conference is designed to develop and increase the knowledge and skills of individuals involved in the recruitment of overseas nationals. Expert speakers and best practice case studies will provide practical guidance for employers on their responsibilities for ensuring that all employees are recruited legally, without discrimination and with necessary support once in the workplace. The specialist training seminar will examine the different ways migrant workers can gain permission to work in the UK and the procedure recruiters need to follow in each case.
