Dr. Mike Goldsmith, Deputy Chairman, COHPA

Dr. Mike Goldsmith pictureMike Goldsmith completed a management buyout of the Sedgwick Noble Lowndes Health Consultancy in April 1998, which is now known as Medigold Health Consultancy Ltd. A former NHS General Practitioner and Trainer, Mike has pioneered a number of initiatives in the private medicine sector, commencing with The Harrow Health Care Centre, Britain's first pre-paid private primary care service, launched in 1982. In a consultant/advisory capacity he has managed projects for a major US Health Maintenance Organisation and has specialised in the provision of cost effective medicine within both the private and NHS sectors. Mike also writes regular papers and articles on healthcare and he has been intimately involved in assisting the previous Government with its reform of the National Health Service. He was an advisor to the Secretary of State for Health until 1 May 1997, and Chairman of the NHS Network. In November 1993, Dr Goldsmith was appointed Group Director of Medical Services of Sedgwick Noble Lowndes Health Division, Medisure, and from June 1995 was the Chief Executive of Sedgwick Noble Lowndes Health Consultancy. He was also Chief Medical Officer of Guardian Health from 1991 to 1997. Medigold Health Consultancy Ltd provides occupational health services for over 250 of Britain's blue chip companies and organisations. They also act as insurance and pensions medicine specialists to a large number of UK insurers and pension funds, both for PMI, PHI and early ill health retirement advice.

Elizabeth Gyngell, Head of Better Working Division & Programme Manager - Management Standards, Health and Safety Executive (HSE)

Elizabeth Gyngell PictureElizabeth Gyngell is the UK Health and Safety Executive Head of Better Working Environment Division and Stress Programme Manager. She has had a varied career spanning over 34 years with the HSE and its predecessors. Her early training was as one of HM Factory Inspectors. She has spent time on "the beat" which included experience of managing a major investigation with a multi-disciplinary team (the Putney gas explosion) and she has had spells working with HSE HQ policy teams. More recently she managed the HSE's Field Operation in the South West. Elizabeth now runs the Better Working Environment Division with responsibility for occupational health (in its widest sense): developing ways of effecting the gear change needed for the Strategy - Securing Health Together - and especially with respect to external stakeholder participation; ensuring that there is appropriate access to OH multi-disciplinary support especially for small firms. This includes developing policy on rehabilitation and managing the Health and Safety Commission's (HSC) Priority Programme for Musculo-Skeletal Disorders (MSD) and Stress.

Dr. Janet L. Asherson BSc, MBA, D.Phil, Head of Environment, Health and Safety Group, Confederation of British Industry (CBI)

Dr. Janet L. Asherson PictureAfter graduating in Chemistry at the University of Sussex, worked in technology and managerial roles in Zambia for a Copper Mining Company and then an Industrial Rubber Products Company. On completion of a doctorate in Medicinal Chemistry joined the UK Health and Safety Executive as a Health and Safety Inspector. Employed by Upjohn Ltd (American pharmaceutical company) as their Environment, Health and Safety Manager then as Production Manager before joining the CBI as Head of Health and Safety. Her experience at the CBI has involved heading up teams covering tourism, land use planning, health, safety, compensation, rehabilitation, environment, energy and biotechnology. She is a member of the UK Government Advisory Committee on Toxic Substances and the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council. In Europe she is a Member of the European Commission Advisory Committee on Safety, Hygiene and Health Protection at Work and a Member of the Administrative Board of the European Health and Safety Agency.

Chris Seaton, Partner and Head of Employment, Burges-Salmon Law Firm

Chris Seaton PictureChris joined Burges Salmon Solicitors in 1991 after serving in the Royal Navy for 11 years. Chris is head of the Employment Group dealing with a full range of contentious and non-contentious employment work. He advises employers and employees in both public and private sectors on the complete range of employment issues. He also advises in relation to corporate transactions including the legal and practical implications of the Transfer of Undertakings Regulations and on employment issues on setting up UK companies for international clients. In 1998 Chris was seconded to a US firm based in Miami. Chris is an experienced Tribunal advocate and a frequent user of the Bristol Mercantile Court for wrongful dismissal and other contractual claims as well as employment related injunctions. Chris lectures extensively both nationally and internationally and provides training on employment law and health and safety issues. Chris is on the committee of the Bristol Branch of the Institute of Personnel and Development as a Policy Adviser and on the Bristol Tribunal Users Committee. He is a member of the Employment Lawyers' Association and European Employment Lawyers Association. He is a contributor to the Employment Law Journal and is the author of a chapter on European Works Councils for "International Employment Law" published by the Centre for International Legal Studies.

 

Mark Mansell, Partner, Allen and Overy LLP's Employment Law Practice

Mark mansell PictureMark Mansell is a partner in Allen & Overy LLP. Mark is described by the legal directories as "the best employment lawyer in London" "an inspired ideas man" and "a joy to deal with". Head of Allen & Overy's employment team for the last eleven years, he is a founding member of Allen & Overy's Outsourcing Group, recognised by The Insider's Guide 2002 as the leading firm for outsourcing in the private sector. An experienced adviser on multi-jurisdictional employment law matters, he is also a member of the European Employment Lawyers Association, the City of London Solicitors Employment Law Sub-Committee and is an accredited CEDR mediator.

Neil Goodrum, Head of Employment Law, McCormicks Solicitors

Neil Goodrum PictureNeil Goodrum is senior litigation partner at McCormicks Solicitors of Leeds and Harrogate and heads the Employment Law Department. He deals with both employer and employee contentious and non-contentious cases, including acting on behalf of major sporting and charitable trust clients. Many of these cases involve substantial claims by senior employees and have often been of a high profile and sensitive nature. As an experienced Employment Tribunal Advocate, Neil has dealt extensively in Employment Law matters including dismissal, redundancy, discrimination, transfer of undertaking cases and has advised on Trade Union issues. He has appeared on local television and radio as an expert in those areas. In addition to holding the Law Society's Higher Courts Qualification, entitling him to appear as Advocate in all Civil and Criminal Courts, he has been an Accredited Mediator with the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) since 1997 and has been lead mediator in many types of disputes including employment, commercial litigation and professional negligence matters.

Alan Bradshaw, Director, Equilibrium Associates

Alan Bradshaw PictureAlan Bradshaw is a psychologist who specialises in work-related stress. As a Director of In Equilibrium, Alan has a lead role in the development and delivery of training for large organisations in the private and public sectors. In a training capacity Alan specialises in working with managers who are dealing with stress-related issues. He places strong emphasis on risk management and minimisation, and achieving this through managers' identifying, discussing and tackling stress-related problems before they become disasters. Alan has extensive experience and knowledge of preventive strategies, and has consulted with many organisations on the development of effective policy on minimising stress risk. An expert in the field of stress risk assessment and management, Alan has recently been involved in the development of a risk assessment and management 'system' for stress at work.

 

Dr. Michael Reddy, Chairman, ICAS Group

Dr. Michael Reddy's PictureMichael Reddy is a Ph.D. Chartered Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society. He now serves as Executive Chairman of ICAS, one of the world's leading providers of employee support in Behavioural Risk Management services. ICAS supports over 1 million employees in some 400 companies world-wide.

Dr Reddy's principal involvement nowadays is with individual and group behaviour causing concern; strategy (risk and stress assessment), policy development regarding employee support, and personal/ professional development for individual Directors.

Dr Reddy has written numerous articles and books (" The Manager's Guide to Counselling at Work", "Sense and Nonsense in Stress Management", "Counselling in UK Organisations 1993: Report and Policy Guide) and is an occasional broadcaster.

 

Sharon Lyons, Managing Director, CIGNA HealthCare

Sharon Lyons PictureSharon joined CIGNA in 1983 and during her 21 years with CIGNA, Sharon has worked within a number of areas throughout the organisation including marketing and hospital negotiations, where she managed the area responsible for contracting with hospitals and the nursing team.

During her time as Head of Healthcare Services, Sharon was responsible for the development of Managed Care, a product which CIGNA pioneered in the UK. CIGNA is recognised in the UK as the leader and expert in Managed Care. Sharon has been instrumental in developing CIGNA's new absence management product, which was launched in February 2000. In her current role Sharon is responsible for all areas of the UK Healthcare business. She has been instrumental in positioning our managed care and integrated health proposition.

Sharon is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute and is currently completing her MBA. She is married with one daughter and in her spare time enjoys playing the piano, living the outdoor life and reading.

Sharon is based at CIGNA's office in Redhill, Surrey.

Adriana Summers, Chartered Counselling Psychologist, Co-Director of MA in Counselling Counselling Studies- University of Manchester, & Managing Director, Anderson Summers Ltd.

Adriana Summers M.A. (Counselling Studies) Chartered Psychologist. Dip Couns, Psychol C.C. Relate, Cert Couns, BSc Psychol Hons - is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist . Adriana also has training and experience in group and organisational dynamics.

She has a background in management (public and private sector) alongside her work as clinician and supervisor. Her research interest is work related stress. She is the managing director of anderson summers - an employee counselling and corporate consultancy firm , and also directs the professional counselling part of the MA in Counselling Studies at The University of Manchester. Adriana has been involved in the Health & Safety Executive's Expert Panel on Stress at Work.

Jacqueline McDonald, UK & US Corporate Recruitment Director, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK)

Jacqui McDonald is the UK & US Corporate Recruitment Director for GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), one of the world's leading producers of prescription medicines, vaccines and consumer healthcare products, many of which are household names. GSK employs over 101,000 employees in 117 countries. They sell products in more than 130 countries and sales total £21.4 billion per year.

Her current responsibilities include recruiting senior level people, overseeing the UK Induction programme, University Recruitment and the Candidate Care Experience.

Jacqui has 17 years of HR experience, she worked for 8 years in the Public Transport sector in an unionised 24 hour environment, dealing with complex HR issues, she then joined a start up Housing Association and through using creative HR solutions helped to transform the culture from public sector to a dynamic commercial environment. Jacqui has been with GSK for 6 years and started her career as a Human Resources Manager in their tablet manufacturing division.

Jacqui is based in London and has a MA in Strategic Human Resources Management and is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Personnel & Development. She was recently featured in the People Management Magazine for the work GSK is doing with emotional intelligence in their selection practices.

Dr. Geoff Helliwell, Chairman, COHPA

Dr. Geoff Helliwell PictureGeoff studied Medicine at Leeds and graduated in 1981. He had one year "on the House" at Leeds General Infirmary before going into the Royal Navy in 1982 (he had been a Medical Cadet since 1978). Most of his time in the Royal Navy was in Nuclear Submarines, during this he completed Higher Specialist Training in Occupational Medicine, and also worked in the Dockyards at Rosyth and Faslane.

In 1990 he left the Navy to work for The Boots Company plc in Nottingham. This included the Occupational Health for Halfords, and also for Boots Pharmaceuticals. In 1992 he moved to be Senior Medical Officer for Rolls-Royce plc in the North and Scotland, and spent 5 years implementing Rolls-Royce's integrated approach to Health, Safety and Environment within the 63 acquired companies that were part of Northern Engineering Industries. This also involved considerable experience of sites in developing countries. In 1997 he became Regional Director for BMI Health Services, then the largest national Occupational Health Provider. He established a regional structure of clinics in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast, Newcastle, Leeds and Manchester. He was elected a Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine in 1999 and has been a regular examiner for their examinations.

In 2003 he became an elected Board Member of the Faculty. He was Chair of the North East Group of the Society of Occupational Medicine from 2001 to 2003, and organiser of the annual conference in Durham in 2002. He has been the Regional Specialty Adviser in Occupational Medicine for the Northern Deanery since 2003, having been Deputy since 2002. He was a founder of WellWork Ltd, and became its first Medical Director in March 2000. He has overseen the rapid growth of the business since then, becoming Managing Director from 2003. In 2003 he brought together a loose network of the main Commercial Providers, which became a trade body in 2004; the Commercial Occupational Health Providers' Association (COHPA). He is now the Founding Chairman. His main area of professional interest is the health effects of Physical Agents, especially vibration and radiation. He lives in Northumberland with his wife and children. In his spare time he enjoys music, both traditional and classical, and taking holidays where he can improve his French speaking.
