Susan Briggs - Founder, The Tourism Network
My tourism industry career started in Yorkshire, working for an incoming tour operator, followed by a specialist study tour operator and incentive company in London. I became self-employed as an independent marketing consultant and trainer almost 15 years ago, when I realised that I didn't like making money for my boss and after realising that many attractions, destinations and hoteliers needed help to promote themselves to overseas customers.
Since then I've undertaken projects for organsiations as diverse as national and regional tourist boards in the UK, regional development agencies, major and minor visitor attractions, hotels and destinations.
These have included development and implementation of marketing strategies and campaigns, communications plans, brochure & web site development & analysis, facilitating brainstorms, "marriage guidance" between small and medium businesses and public sector organisations, promoting destinations such as Spitalfields & Brick Lane, multicultural marketing, promoting to groups and the travel trade, developing new ways of targeting VFR business, bringing different sectors like cultural industries and tourism together, developing marketing consortia and speaking at many events.
I've written three books, "Successful Tourism Marketing" and "Successful Web Marketing", both published by Kogan Page and now translated into several other languages, and "English Experiences" a sort of alternative guidebook published by Metro Publications.
